Knowle West was the future of housing 100 years ago when it was founded as the ‘5,000 island forest’: 5,000 homes on a hill on the edge of Bristol, all designed according to garden suburb principles.

It is proving to be the future of housing again as the community experiments with new, citizen-led approaches to creating affordable housing using local knowhow and resources.

Join hosts Makala and John, and their very special guests, for a live chat about how Knowle Westers are making sure they – and not developers – call the shots. From tapping into the estate’s DIY hack spirit, to redefining ‘affordable’ housing, to unpacking what it means to be a good neighbour, every topic is up for grabs and the chat at such events is always lively.

Decision-makers and stakeholders will be in the audience including Cllr Paul Smith (Bristol City Council Cabinet Member for Housing) and representatives from Homes England, Nationwide Foundation and other community-led housing groups. Some will be called upon to give a response to what is said on the platform.

In addition, the evening will launch the new We Can Make Manifesto for Citizen-Led Housing containing findings and provocations from the wider We Can Make project. The first We Can Make report was discussed at the 2017 Festival of the Future City.

The We Can Make Chat Show, a series of podcast shows made by We Can Make and No Bindings featuring artwork by Bristol artists, which will also be showcased in a ‘best of’ selection. The broadcasting of the series will begin in Sept 2019.

There will be time for audience questions and responses during the event, which will be followed by free drinks and a chance to continue the conversation next door at the We Can Make prototype home.

Timings: 17:45 – 18:45: Live Show; 18:45 – 20:00: After Show Drinks at the We Can Make prototype home.
