Darwin Day: How Can We Be Wiser About Human Difference?

To mark this year’s Darwin Day, award-winning science journalist Angela Saini asks how we can build a scientific future that doesn’t resort to biological essentialism.

Throughout the history of modern science, people have sought to classify humans and make biological generalisations based on these classifications. This led to centuries of damaging beliefs about racial, class and gender differences, some of which persist to this day. Darwin himself wasn’t immune from falling into this trap.

What are the benefits and limitations of sifting humans into biological groups, and what risks do we face when we choose to study our species in this way? Might it be possible to move beyond the need to group in the first place? Saini will draw on examples from both the past and the present – including the Covid-19 pandemic.

Angela Saini is in conversation with Jenny Kleeman, who gave the Bristol 2020 Darwin Day lecture. You can listen to that by scrolling down to Related Events.

Interacting at the event

Polls are located in a tab just below the video feed. Some events may add a poll prior to the event or during a live session, so be sure to check this area periodically.

Questions & Answers are also in a tab just below the video feed. This is where you can submit any questions or leave a comment on a question. Once the host has answered the question, you will be able to view it in the answered tab. You can also vote on questions that others have submitted if you would like to see them answered.

Chat is located on the right hand side of the video feed. This is a great place to say hello and introduce yourself before the event goes live. Chat lets you directly communicate with the host and other attendees before, during, and after an event.
