My Boy
Fri 18 October 2019,

Jackie Coogan stars in his first major film since his break-out debut starring alongside Charles Chaplin in The Kid (1921). In this comedy drama, set on the busy streets of New York, Jackie Blair (Coogan) returns to the USA by ship and escapes immigration officials at Ellis Island. Jackie goes to live with an old ship’s master (Claude Gillingwater) who struggles to find work and pay the rent. Continuing the theme of the ‘City and Silent Film’ My Boy will be accompanied with a screening of Charles Sheeler and Paul Strand’s city symphony short film Manhatta (1921), a swooping journey across 1920s Manhattan, guided by the lines of a Walt Whitman poem.

Live piano accompaniment by Meg Morley. With thanks to Lobster Films, Paris.

This film is part of Festival of the Future City – an initiative of Festival of Ideas. Festival of the Future City takes place every two years in Bristol celebrating and debating the future of cities with talks, walks, debates, arts projects and new books. The 2019 Festival of the Future City includes classic utopian films about cities; cities in silent cinema; documentaries on New Towns, democracy, the housing crisis and the anthropocene in the series: Cities, Future Cities and Film. We are grateful to BFI for their support for this programme. See the rest of the Festival of the Future City film programme here.
