Der Kampf ums Matterhorn
Sun 27 October 2019,

An Alpine thriller combining depictions of historical events with a jealousy sub-plot about an English climber and his mountain guide wanting to be the first to climb the Matterhorn.

Der Kampf ums Matterhorn is a thriller based on the true story of English climber Edward Whymper who vies with Jean-Antoine Carrel, an Italian mountain guide, to conquer the Matterhorn. Tyrolean athlete Luis Trenker, later a leading director, cuts a dash as the mean and moody Italian. The breath-taking camerawork creates nail-biting suspense.

Digitally restored by DCP Filmmuseum München, live piano musical accompaniment by Stephen Horne and introduction by Miranda Gower-Qian, Programme Director, Phoenix Cinema.

This film is part of Festival of the Future City – an initiative of Festival of Ideas.
