The Sixties and Violence
Astrid Proll and Iain Sinclair
12 May 08
Arnolfini, Bristol

Astrid Proll was a member of the early Baader-Meinhof gang (Red Army Faction) and spent time in prison. She wrote about her time in Baader-Meinhof: Pictures on the Run 1967-1977. In discussion with writer and commentator Iain Sinclair, she talks about Germany in 1968, why she came to England in 1970 and what happened afterwards.

Sinclair's next book, a 'documentary fiction' entitled Hackney: That Rose-Red Empire, includes coverage of Proll's life in England.

seems a shame that they seemed unwilling to discuss terrorism
at this event

I don't know what the point of this one was. Instead of taking part in a discussion about the 60s and revolutionary violence, Astrid spent the evening evading questions on the subject, apologising for capitalism, admitting she was 'weary' of talking about the RAF, reminding us that her days on the run were all in the past and pointing out that now she's a successful photo-editor. All of which is fine, but I don't think it's what anyone had turned up to listen to. Ian Sinclair's vapid interview technique vexed her not at all (although veterans of the West German security forces may have been impressed by its subtlety) and seemed transfixed by the critical issue of what a cool place Hackney must have been in 1976. Meanwhile, Astrid was - irony of ironies - pedalling a book of old RAF snapshots (so fears that the festival of ideas is really little more than a cosy book marketing exercise have yet to be calmed).

I think I deserve an award for finding this 'comments' box on the website. Hiding all past events in an 'archive' the minute they're over isn't going to help people to find them or join a debate.
