While its universities are among the best in the world, the UK performs less well than its competitors when it comes to ensuring a high level of skills across the entire workforce. Levels of basic maths and reading are below OECD averages, there is poor performance in adult literacy and numeracy and a shortage in technical skills. Added to this, the ever-growing fear that many low-skilled and medium-skilled jobs are threatened by robots means that re-skilling the UK is now a key priority.

Experts in the economics of school education and vocational training – including Simon Burgess (University of Bristol), Kirabo Jackson (Northwestern), Sandra McNally (University of Surrey) and Steve Machin (London School of Economics) – share their insights into the effects of recent reforms to school and post-16 education and the prospects for future improvement in performance. Chaired by Soumaya Keynes (The Economist).
