Each month Spike Island in partnership with Bristol Festival of Ideas invites a debut novelist to read from and talk about their work in a relaxed, informal setting. Topics of discussion include theme, structure, inspiration and the craft of writing. These sessions are a great way to discover new writing talent and wonderful books.

This month’s debut-novel book club introduces Andrew Hurley and his novel The Loney, winner of the 2015 Costa Book Awards First Novel Award.

When the remains of a young child are discovered during a winter storm on a stretch of the bleak Lancashire coastline known as the Loney, a man named Smith is forced to confront the terrifying and mysterious events that occurred 40 years earlier when he visited the place as a boy.

The Loney’s power lies in all that Hurley dares to leave out. This is a novel of the unsaid, the implied, the barely grasped or understood, crammed with dark holes and blurry spaces that your imagination feels complelled to fill. – Observer
