Film screening and discussion
This haunting, deeply moving and strangely life-affirming documentary follows four terminally ill cancer patients as they each approach the end of their lives.
In a hospice on the Isle of Wight, four individuals experience the year in which their lives will end. Illness progresses, relationships gently shift, extraordinary stories are told, and we are witness to rarely seen and intensely private moments, plus the rituals and stark realities of the dying process – including the moment of death itself. Death is shown to be natural and everyday – but also unspeakable and strange.
A film of enormous delicacy and care, Island is an all too rare look at a subject we rarely see, talk about or acknowledge. It is also an eye-opening reminder of the importance of living life while you can – and to share it with those you love.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with director Steven Eastwood.
This screening is part of the Grief, Death and Love season at Watershed.
