Shoah
Sun 22 May 2016,

Shoah (1985), a Franco-British film directed by Claude Lanzmann about the Holocaust, is rightly regarded as one of the greatest documentaries of all time, hailed as a masterpiece by many critics. It uses interviews and visits to Holocaust sites combined with testimonies from survivors, witnesses, perpetrators and bystanders, often secretly recorded using hidden cameras. The Holocaust sites visited include Chełmno, where mobile gas vans were first used by Germans to exterminate Jews; the death camps of Treblinka and Auschwitz-Birkenau; and the Warsaw Ghetto. Shoah won many awards and aroused great controversy, the New York Times calling it ‘an epic film about the greatest evil of modern times’.

The screening of Parts Three and Four is on Sun 29 May.
