What future for Syria? Author Diana Darke finds hope and inspiration in telling the story of a Syrian cloth trader in her latest book, The Merchant of Syria, which she reads from and discusses at this special event.

In the book, the story of the merchant’s resilience is told in parallel to the rich history of a nation built on trade. Over millennia Syria has seen great conflict and turmoil, but like the remarkable story of Abu Chaker, it continues to survive. Barely literate, and supporting his mother and sisters from the age of ten, Abu builds up a business empire, despite twice losing everything he has.

Diana Darke follows his tumultuous journey, from instability in Syria and civil war in Lebanon, to his arrival in England in the 1970s, where he rescued a failing Yorkshire textile mill, Hield Bros, transforming it into a global brand, based on little more than trust.

The Festival of Ideas endeavours to hold its events in venues that are accessible to all, but if you have specific access concerns it is advisable to contact the venue direct. The venue is equipped with a hearing loop system. St George’s Bristol regrets that due to St George’s listed-building status there is limited access to some parts of our building. However, St George’s welcomes customers with additional needs and there is a dedicated accessible entrance from Charlotte Street (via two external lifts) and a lift in the stalls foyer providing access to St George’s Bar. Please be aware that access to the galleries is currently by stairs only. Please mention your particular needs to the Box Office staff when you book and we will give you all the assistance and advice you need.

We sometimes film and photograph Festival of Ideas events. Please let us know if you do not wish to be filmed or photographed.
