Life After Dark

Dave Haslam
Thu 26 November 2015,

We are sorry to announce that this event has been cancelled. Ticket holders will be contacted by Watershed Box Office.

The story of nightclubs and music venues in Britain is a story of glamour, escape, and good times; late nights, lost weekends, and music revolutions; dressing-up, illicit drugs and dodgy doormen; and it’s a story with a rich and revealing social history. Dave Haslam takes us from vice-ridden Victorian dance halls to psychedelic light shows; through the jazz decades to the mods and beat groups; from high street discos to reggae sound systems; from gay pubs and private members clubs to legendary gigs and warehouse raves, and more.

Travelling to Newcastle, Liverpool, Soho, Sheffield, Glasgow, Birmingham, Bristol and beyond, Haslam explores the culture, the moral panics and the commercialisation of nightclubbing – and he celebrates the social and emotional significance of nightclubs and music venues for both the British people and their communities. Along the way, he interviews club owners and clubbers, like David Peace on goth clubs in Leeds, as well as DJs and musicians from a broad cross-section of the British music scene from Jarvis Cocker to Noddy Holder, the Chemical Brothers to The Slits and Massive Attack to Duran Duran. With a genuine passion and unarguable authority, he has written a definitive British history of life after dark packed with unforgettable stories of significant venues and great nights out.
