Populism and Economics

Barry Eichengreen
Mon 08 October 2018,

In the last few years, populism – of the right, left, and centre varieties – has spread like wildfire throughout the world. Economic historian Barry Eichengreen (author of Hall of Mirrors and Exorbitant Privilege) examines its global resurgence and explains the appeals and dangers of populism across history in his latest book, The Populist Temptation.

Looking at signature elements of present and earlier populist waves, Eichengreen argues that populists tend to thrive most in the wake of economic downturns when it is easy to convince the masses of elite wrongdoing. He explores the lasting political fallout that follows in the wake of major economic crises, and looks at the solutions to addressing the concerns that populists raise.
