Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire

Akala
Fri 11 May 2018,

From the first time he was stopped and searched as a child, to the day he realised his mother was white, to his first encounters with racist teachers – race and class have shaped Akala’s life and outlook. He now takes his own experiences and widens them out to look at the social, historical and political factors that have left us where we are today.

Covering everything from the police, education and identity to politics, sexual objectification and the far right, Akala speaks directly to British denial and squeamishness when it comes to confronting the issues of race and class at the heart of the legacy of Britain’s racialised empire.

He will be in conversation with historian and author David Olusoga.

You can purchase a copy of Natives at the time of booking at the special price of £11.99 (RRP £16.99). You will be able to collect your copy at St George’s on the day of the event. The book will be available to buy on the day, but this special rate will not apply then.
