Mon 23 November 2015,

Our fourth annual event celebrating the art of the graphic story from Jonathan Cape brings together acclaimed writers and artists working in a variety of styles.

Programme for the evening:

18:30-19:10 Posy Simmonds: Gemma Bovery
Posy Simmonds, creator of the legendary cartoon strips featuring the Weber family for the Guardian, talks about her work including Gemma Bovery (1999), in which many familiar ingredients of Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary are given new life in a satirical tale of English expatriates in France. It was described by the Observer as ‘A tour de force of comic storytelling’ and by the Sunday Telegraph as ‘A work of genius’. A film version of the graphic novel was released in the summer of 2015.

19:35-20:15 Evie Wyld and Joe Sumner: Everything is Teeth
Spending summers in the brutal heat of coastal New South Wales, Evie Wyld became a girl obsessed with sharks. Everything is Teeth is a delicate and intimate collection of the memories she brought home to England, a book about family, love and the irresistible forces that pass through life unseen, under the surface, ready to emerge at any point. It was co-created with model maker and illustrator Joe Sumner. They talk about their collaboration.

20:20-21:00 Kate Beaton: Step Aside, Pops
Popular online comic artist Kate Beaton, creator of Hark! A Vagrant talks about her new collection, which showcases her irreverent love of history, pop culture and literature and hilariously parodies everything we learned in school – from Herodotus to Columbus, the Brontes to the Hardy boys.
