The Hot Topic: How to Tackle Global Warming and Still Keep the Lights On
29 January 08
Council House, Bristol

Last year, awareness about global warming reached a tipping point. Now one of the most respected scientists in the field of climate change offers the first concise guide to both the problems and the solutions. Guiding us past a blizzard of information and misinformation, Sir David King explains the science of warming, the most cutting-edge technological solutions from small to large, and the national and international politics that will affect our efforts. King proposes specific ideas to fix a very specific problem. Most important, he offers hope: this is a serious issue, perhaps the most serious that humanity has ever faced. King shows us how we can still do something about it.
Sir David King, the British Government's Chief Scientific Adviser, is widely credited with persuading the UK government to act on climate change and with getting key states (including China, Russia, the USA and India) around the negotiating table. He is Director of the new School for Enterprise and the Environment at Oxford University.
Sir David King's lecture was followed with questions and a discussion led by a special panel of experts including Chris Preist, lead technologist on HP Labs' Climate Futures investigation, Vala Ragnarsdottir from the University of Bristol and Sarah Pugh from Transition Bristol. |
