According to new data gathered by satellite navigation company TomTom, Istanbul is the most gridlocked city in the world. There, the average percentage of extra travel time experienced by drivers compared to free flow travel times is 58%.
Other congested cities in the top five included Mexico City (55%), Rio de Janeiro (51%), Moscow (50%) and Salvador (46%). Recife, St Petersburg, Bucharest, Warsaw and Los Angeles also made the top ten.
The study measured drivers’ travel times throught the day for 218 cities across six continents, and compared peak periods to non-congested periods, taking into account local roads, arterials and highways.
