Peter Popham’s major new biography of Aung San Suu Kyi draws upon previously untapped testimony and fresh revelations to tell the story of a woman whose bravery and determination have captivated people around the globe and who is celebrated today as one of the world’s greatest exponents of non-violent political defiance since Mahatma Gandhi. Popham interviewed Suu Kyi when she was released from house arrest in 2002, and met her again in 2011. Peter Popham is in discussion with Sue Lloyd Roberts. This event is in association with Asia House Festival of Asian Literature.
Peter Popham has toured Burma as an undercover journalist several times since his first visit to the country in 1991. A foreign correspondent and commentator with the Independent newspaper, Peter Popham covered South Asia in the late 1990s. He made his first visit to Burma in 1991. His biography of Aung San Suu Kyi, The Lady and the Peacock, was published in 2011. Visit his website at www.peterpopham.com.
Sue Lloyd-Roberts MBE is an Emmy-award-winning television journalist, who works as Foreign Correspondent for BBC World Affairs. Earlier in her career she worked for ITN. She was awarded the European Women of Achievement Award in 1995.
