This passionate expose of the state of the natural environment, produced and narrated by Leonardo Di Caprio, presents us with a veritable flood of striking images of environmental turbulence, from Hurricane Katrina to rush-hour traffic in downtown Los Angeles to huge trawlers leaching the oceans of their wildlife.
Bolstered by an inspirational cast of talking heads including Stephen Hawking and Mikhail Gorbachev, Di Caprio pairs with these talented first-time directors to produce a multi-layered documentary with a strong and intelligent message. Though the issues are stark, the film is ultimately hopeful, suggesting that by working together and developing more socially responsible attitudes we can shape a better future.
An expert panel discusses what we need to do next: Peter Melchett (Soil Association and organic farmer), John Pontin, Bristol businessman and environmentalist, whose book, The Converging World, tells the story of making Chew Magna a 'zero waste' society, Helen Clarkson (Deputy Director of the Public Sector Programme, Forum for the Future) and James Vaccaro of Triodos Bank, an authority on renewable energy and sustainability.
